Endo’s overall contribution to Liverpool
Endo joined Liverpool in 2023. Before that, he played for VfB Stuttgart. He joined the club on a loan spell in 2019-2020. He signed a permanent contract with the club in 2020, after which he played for Stuttgart till 2023. Before VfB Stuttgart, Endo also played for Sint Truiden club between 2018 and 2020.
Endo’s contract with the Reds will expire by next year. However, the management doesn’t look too keen on retaining him. Even if they wanted to, Endo’s frequent injuries prevented them from considering him as a serious option. He sustained a serious ankle injury that pulled him out from both the Premier League and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That is the major reason why the Reds are considering options for Endo’s transfer.
Endo was signed by the Reds for a fee of £16 million. He also became the second Japanese player to play for the club after Takumi Minamino, who joined the club in 2020. He made his Premier League debut on August 27, 2023, in an away victory against the Newcastle United. Endo was part of the Liverpool team that won the 2024-25 Premier League title. In international football, he was part of the Japanese team that finished as runners-up in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. He was also part of the Japanese team that won the 2016 AFC U23 Asian Championship.

What’s next for Wataru Endo?
Endo is currently recovering from his injuries before he prepares for the next season. He was forced to retire from international **football**due to the ankle injury he sustained in February 2026. He tore a ligament in his ankle during a match against Sunderland. It would be tough to say which club Endo chooses for his next season. However, clubs like Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United, and Fulham have already shown their interest in him.
Meanwhile Liverpool are aiming to bounce back in the 2026-27 season under the energetic leadership of Andoni Iraola. He knows that it is make or break for him this season. He cannot afford to repeat the same mistakes as made by the previous manager Arne Slot. Apart from that, he is also working on improving the management’s relations with the players.
One of the reasons why Slot was sacked after the 2025-26 season was due to the alleged friction between the team management and the Liverpool players. Players like Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate, Rhys Williams, and Andrew Robertson chose to leave the team after the previous season.
It’s been one setback after another for Endo this year. He wasn’t able to fulfill his wish of competing for the Japanese team one last time at the World Cup. He wasn’t able to complete his journey with Liverpool either, because of an unexpected injury. However, he is hopeful of making it big in club football next season.
