The New England Patriots have a crowded wide receiver room heading into the 2026 NFL season, and the odd man out remains a total mystery. Despite swirling trade rumors, the organization reportedly envisions a significant role for wideout Kayshon Boutte.
According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, the coaching staff still highly values the 24-year-old playmaker.
“The Patriots have seven receivers that could be on this roster,” Reiss recently noted. “They're telling me that Kayshon Boutte is gonna be a big part of what they do. That could become a challenge if another team comes calling.”

New England completely overhauled its receiving corps this offseason. The front office swung a massive blockbuster trade for superstar A.J. Brown and signed Romeo Doubs to a lucrative four-year deal during free agency. Those major additions naturally pushed returning players down the depth chart, instantly sparking speculation that the team might flip a younger asset for draft capital.
Boutte actually put together a highly efficient 2025 campaign while operating in a low-volume role. He appeared in 14 regular-season games, hauling in 33 of his 46 targets for 551 receiving yards and six touchdowns. The former sixth-round pick proved incredibly dangerous down the field, averaging a career-best 16.7 yards per catch, a mark that ranked fifth in the entire league.
Right now, Brown and Doubs sit firmly atop the depth chart as the primary weapons for franchise quarterback Drake Maye. That leaves Boutte battling with veterans like Mack Hollins and DeMario Douglas for the remaining targets in a suddenly loaded offense.
If Boutte continues making explosive plays during training camp, New England will have a hard time letting him walk. However, as Reiss pointed out, rival general managers constantly monitor receiver depth. If a receiver-needy franchise offers the Patriots an enticing draft pick, their commitment to keeping Boutte heavily involved could certainly face the ultimate test.
