Tyrique George is targeting European football in his first full season at Everton after overcoming illness to score his first goal for the club in the 3-1 win over Premier League rivals Newcastle United in the Blues’ penultimate friendly at Murrayfield.

Despite losing his voice, a hoarse sounding George admitted that finding the net with a spectacular strike to cap an impressive victory for David Moyes’ men was the perfect medicine.

The £18million summer signing from Chelsea, who initially arrived at Hill Dickinson Stadium on loan on deadline day of the winter window, said: “I’m just a bit sick. I’m really enjoying it, obviously to play for Everton is great.

“I’m just trying to get fit for the Prem. It’s been good. The pitch was a bit of a struggle, but I thought we dealt with it quite well.

“From the first time I came in the manager just told me to be expressive, to be myself. That’s kind of what I’m showing when I’m given my opportunities, showing what I can do.

“I definitely see positivity. Obviously, we want to get Europe – that’s the aim.

“That was the aim last season and hopefully we can do it this season.

“It’s a great squad, a great bunch of lads. We gel really well and we want to carry it on into the season.”
