Pep Chavarria needs to improve his attacking numbers at Chelsea

The left-back has admitted he joined to play under Alonso, who after pre-season is expected to start the Blues in a back three when Premier League action comes around at last.

In 105 La Liga games, the 28-year-old has registered just six assists, only two more than Alejandro Garnacho managed in his one season at Stamford Bridge.

He also has just two goals, suggesting he is not going to have a Marcos Alonso-style impact in the wing-back role, which found so much success during Antonio Conte’s title-winning campaign.

Chavarria also only averages 0.5 crosses per game, which would not be enough to get the most out of either Joao Pedro or Danny Welbeck in the penalty area.

Chavarria facing battle to become a Chelsea starter

It looks like the Spaniard will be competing with Palestra to start the opening Premier League game against Fulham.

The Italian has proven a favourite to Alonso during pre-season, playing on both sides of defence, although it looks like he cracked the code in their victory over AC Milan.

Pedro Neto started that game on the right of the back five, with his work-rate being a key reason why he has made the transition so seamlessly.

Chavarria may have to bide his time before he gets his chance as a starting player, although will be afforded the time to develop his attacking skillset to become a suitable replacement for Cucurella.
