Man Utd legend Paul Scholes has urged his former club to make a move for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.
Spurs are set to sanction the sale of the Argentinian international for between £30m and £40m, and Scholes feels he would be a great addition to Michael Carrick’s side, despite his tendency to pick up yellow and red cards:
“You may laugh at this, and I may be criticised for it, but I would go and recruit Cristian Romero at Tottenham. I know he’s a madman, I know he has disciplinary problems, but he can be a very good centre-back and someone that Michael Carrick could really calm down.”
“We’re talking about £30 or £40 million for a player who was a centre-back in a World Cup final. I know he has disciplinary problems, but I’ll go and get him. I think they desperately need a central defender; the ones they have at the moment are not up to the task.”
Romero is expected to move to Spain
Atletico Madrid are currently favourites to snap up the 28-year-old. Arsenal and Inter Milan have also been credited with an interest, but transfers to both of those teams have been ruled out for different reasons.
Spurs are unwilling to sell Romero to their North London rivals, while Inter needed to find a buyer for Benjamin Pavard before making their offer.

Man Utd are NOT in the market for a centre-back
Despite Scholes suggesting that the Red Devils need to bring reinforcements for the middle of defence, his former club are not expected to strengthen that position, despite tentative links to Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini.
Carrick currently has 5 centre-halves at his disposal – Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven. Unless one is sold, there is no room for further additions in that area of the pitch.
