“He’ll make a difference”: Birmingham City new boy hailed by former EFL player

Birmingham City have swooped to sign the defender this summer following his exit from fellow Championship side Middlesbrough. He has penned a three-year deal with BCFC running until June 2029.

Fry, 28, has spent his entire career to date at the Riverside Stadium and is now looking forward to a fresh start in the Midlands ahead of the new 2026/27 season. He made 300 appearances for Boro in all competitions and chipped in with five goals, as well as having a loan spell away at Rotherham United back in 2016.

Chambers, who had spells at Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town and Colchester United, is impressed by his addition and has said on the EFL preview show on Sky Sports: “Dael Fry’s come in there at centre half. I think that’s someone with experience at centre half that they’ve probably lacked a little bit, to have someone with that solid base. Yes they’ve got some good players there but I think he’ll make a difference with the experience he’s had at Middlesbrough.”

Birmingham City head to Bramall Lane this weekend to face Sheffield United. They beat Swansea City 1-0 last time out in the Carabao Cup.

Birmingham City inject experience into their squad with Luke Chambers addition

Birmingham City didn’t have to pay a fee for Fry which was a boost. BCFC brought him in to bolster their defensive department.

He provides the Blues with more competition and depth in their squad. In addition, he will battle it out with the likes of Christoph Klarer, Phil Neumann and Jack Robinson for a place in Davies’ starting XI.

As Chambers has alluded to, Fry knows the league inside out and will be a useful character to have in and around the dressing room. He is someone who the younger players can learn a lot from.

The ex-England youth international was a great servant to Middlesbrough. He obviously felt the time was right now for him to move on and try something new.

The Verdict: Dael Fry was a smart acquisition for Birmingham City, but they need some more new faces

Birmingham City could do with a bit more firepower in their ranks, especially at the top end of the pitch. BCFC still have plenty of time to find some more new faces between now and the end of the transfer window on 1st September.

The Blues have been in for Joe Gelhardt at Leeds United but he appears set to re-join Hull City which will be a blow. Nevertheless, it gives Davies the opportunity to find someone else.

Fry is a solid acquisition and if he can keep fit throughout the campaign, he could become a popular figure among the fanbase. Birmingham City should be in confident mood after beating Swansea City last Saturday and they will be eager to get a positive result against Sheffield United.
