'That's what I'm showing' - George reveals what Moyes told him after Everton move
Everton forward Tyrique George says he is focused on building his fitness ahead of the new Premier League season after scoring his first goal for the club in the pre-season win against Newcastle United on Wednesday.
George, who is eligible to represent England, Ghana or Nigeria, capped a fine team move in the second half as Everton secured a 3-1 victory over their Premier League rivals.
The Nigerian-eligible forward combined well with Harrison Armstrong on the edge of the box before turning past his marker and firing a low shot into the bottom corner.
Speaking to Premier Sports after the game, George said he is enjoying life at Everton and is focused on regaining full fitness ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season
“I am really enjoying it and obviously to play for Everton is great,” George said. “I am just trying to get fit for the Premier League. The pitch was a bit of a struggle but thought we dealt with it quite well.”
The youngster revealed that manager David Moyes encouraged him to be himself after completing his move to the club. George said he is determined to follow the advice and take advantage of further opportunities to show what he can do.
On what manager Moyes said to him after joining Everton on a permanent deal, George responded: “The first time I came in, he asked me to be myself. That’s what I am showing and hopefully I can get more opportunities to show what I can do.”
George also backed Everton to challenge for European qualification this season, saying the club’s ambition remains to secure a place in Europe.
“Obviously, we want to get to Europe, that was the aim last season - hopefully we can do that this season. We are positive,” he added.
George secured a permanent move to the Merseyside club despite struggling to make a significant impact during the second half of last season following his loan move from Chelsea.
The young forward will now be eager to repay the manager’s faith with strong performances in the upcoming campaign.
