Arsenal have made a move for Marc Pubill after Mikel Arteta identified the Atletico Madrid defender as a summer target, but the Spanish club have immediately shut the door on a transfer.
Arteta remains keen to strengthen his defence before the window closes, particularly with William Saliba injured and Jurrien Timber still working his way back towards full fitness.
Fabrizio Romano first revealed Arsenal had made contact to understand Pubill’s situation and whether a deal could be possible.
Spanish outlet AS has now independently confirmed Arsenal’s approach and revealed why Arteta is pushing for the 23-year-old.

Marc Pubill Arsenal move immediately blocked
Arteta was reportedly particularly impressed by Pubill when Arsenal faced Atletico in last season’s Champions League semi-final.
The Spain international originally established himself as a right-back but has successfully adapted to centre-back under Diego Simeone, giving him the versatility Arsenal are looking for.
Arteta subsequently asked sporting director Andrea Berta, who previously worked at Atletico, to explore whether Pubill could be brought to north London.
Atletico’s answer, however, has been clear.
AS report that Pubill has been declared not for sale, with Atletico unwilling to even enter negotiations over the World Cup winner. His current contract also contains a huge €500million release clause, and the club are working on improved terms after his rapid development.
Arsenal have been assessing several defensive options this summer. ReadArsenal recently analysed why Jules Kounde could suit Arteta’s needs better than £60million-rated Ezri Konsa as the Gunners search for somebody capable of operating in more than one position.
Pubill clearly fits that profile too.
Arsenal have made their interest known, but Atletico’s emphatic response means Berta may have to look elsewhere unless their stance changes dramatically.
