Chelsea have added Pep Chavarria to Xabi Alonso’s squad, as per latest transfer news. The new signing will be bringing experience and energy to a position left open by Marc Cucurella’s exit.
Chelsea complete Pep Chavarria move
Chelsea have officially signed Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano. This gives Xabi Alonso an experienced option on the left as he prepares for his first campaign at Stamford Bridge. The 28-year-old defender has agreed a contract running until 2031. The Blues will be paying £16.3m initially and a further £1.7m available through add-ons. The move comes after Marc Cucurella left for Real Madrid, creating a clear need for another left-back.
Chavarria arrives after four years with Rayo, where his steady growth has turned him into a trusted La Liga defender. His move to the West London side has been far from simple. He started with UE Figueres, moved to UE Olot in 2018 and later joined Real Zaragoza in 2020. His senior career then reached Spain’s top division when Rayo signed him in August 2022. Since then, he has become a regular presence for the Madrid club.
His latest numbers show why Chelsea see him as more than a squad player. He has and 44 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 season, including 37 starts, with 3 assists and 1 goal. He is a defender who can contribute at both ends while handling a heavy workload. His ability to push forward also fits the demands of Premier League football.
Xabi Alonso Gets A Flexible Defender
The arrival also gives Alonso a player who can change his role during attacks. Chavarria has grown from a full-back into someone who can move inside, support midfield and remain useful when his team has the ball. That ability could be very vital at Chelsea. The head coach will want his defenders to help control games rather than simply protect the penalty area.
Chavarria’s work rate may be his biggest strength. His time under Andoni Iraola at Rayo helped shape his aggressive style. Meanwhile, three seasons with Inigo Perez brought more detail to his game. The player has called Perez the best coach he has worked with, which shows how much his growth has depended on tactical coaching.
The move to Chelsea now gives him another chance to improve under a manager known for demanding clear roles from his players. The Blues will expect quick impact from the new signing rather than patience built around potential. Chavarria is entering has played regularly in La Liga and now has a long contract that gives him time to settle.
After making the move, he said: “I’m so excited to get started. This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success.
**“There are a lot of people who have helped me get to this moment and I have to thank my family. They have always supported me and today is only possible because of them.**“
The Blues Expect Huge Impact
Chavarria’s balance should help Chelsea across a season. Alonso needs a defender who can stay wide, mix with attackers and recover quickly after possession is lost. His arrival also raises competition for places, which can improve standards across the squad.
For the west London side, the move is a sign that the new era under Alonso will not depend only on young talents. The newly signed defender brings experience, energy and a proven record of playing regularly at a high level. With the left side needing a new first-choice option, his part could be huge for the 2026/27 season.
