Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen reckons Scotland hero Scott McTominay would be a perfect fit for the Red Devils' rivals LIVERPOOL - as he reminds him of Steven Gerrard.

The Dutchman is a huge fan of the Tartan Army talisman and insists his energy and goal threat would be ideally suited to Andoni Iraola’s Anfield revolution.

McTominay made 255 appearances for Manchester United before moving to Napoli in 2024 where he won the Serie A title and the league’s player of the year award in his first season.

Meulensteen - part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s backroom team for six years - would love to see the 29-year-old return to Old Trafford and work with Michael Carrick.

But he believes he’s also ideal for a controversial move to United’s old adversaries with Curtis Jones rumoured to be leaving for Inter Milan.

Speaking to Tipman Tips, Meulensteen said: “Scott McTominay has Gerrard-esque qualities and would suit Liverpool perfectly, he's one of those midfielders that can get you goals.

“Now how many of those midfielders are around today? He brings physicality, energy, drive, courage, goals, and makes good box runs.

“Would he choose Liverpool? Possibly not, because Man United is everything for him and would there not be a case for Michael Carrick to say why is there not an opportunity for us to bring McTominay back?

“He's not the silky midfield player in his passing and his decision making the way that Michael Carrick was himself and Scholes was, but he's developed into a very important player for Napoli and shows that week in, week out, as well as leading Scotland.”

McTominay left Manchester United for Napoli in 2024 after struggling to establish himself as a regular under Erik ten Hag.

But has since become a key figure for the Italian side, winning the Serie A title in his debut season.

The 73-times capped Scotland international has two years left on his deal in Italy although Napoli are reportedly ready to offer a bumper contract extension.

And Meulensteen said: “I've been very impressed with him since he left because that could have easily been the start of his career fizzling out.

“When you go to another club in a new country, another language and suddenly the manager doesn't really rate you, and you’re on the bench and you're not playing it is extremely tough.

“But with Scott it’s the total opposite, he has bloomed and come to life.”
