Major development: Liverpool jump ahead of Man Utd in race to sign"outstanding"£100m ace

Liverpool look to be ahead of rivals Manchester United in the race to sign Crystal Palace ace Adam Wharton this summer, following a major new update.

The 22-year-old stands out as a fantastic midfield option for the Reds under Andoni Iraola, with Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony talking up the move recently, saying:

“I’d love them to sign Adam Wharton. I think [Alexis] Mac Allister, for me, his legs were gone last year. It was only when he put an Argentina shirt on that his legs reappeared.

“If you could do business there with him going, I think you bring [Wharton] in and you’ve got a player for the next seven, eight years that will be a starter. He’s got so much upside and potential in him. Even if he costs £85m-£100m or whatever else, you’re getting the player for the long-term.”

There have also been claims suggesting Liverpool are “lurking” for Wharton, and now a respected source on X has provided a significant new update on what is happening:

“We reported last night that Man Utd made enquiries about Adam Wharton , but we can confirm LFC have made direct calls to Crystal Palace this morning. Big development.”

Adam Wharton can reignite Liverpool’s midfield

In the eyes of plenty of Liverpool fans, Wharton would be a perfect signing ahead of the new season, bringing youth and natural No.6 skills to the midfield at a time when fresh blood is required.

Granted, he could potentially cost as much as £100m, which feels steep, but he is a fantastic footballer on and off the ball, being lauded by England teammate Declan Rice: “He’s been outstanding. In training, he impressed a lot of the players. He’s so composed and calm on the ball.”

It could be a case of whether Liverpool have the funds to spend so much on a midfielder or not, but if they do, Wharton should be considered the priority option.

He is only going to get better alongside elite players at Anfield, and would reignite a midfield that toiled last season, while beating United to his signature would be an added bonus.
