The Premier League is widely considered the best and biggest league in the world, and nothing symbolises English football more than a good old fashioned centre-back.
The English top flight boasts some of the very best on the planet, and not just because of their defensive attributes, with modern day centre-backs expected be elite in possession as well as out of it.
The top flight has seen Champions League winners, consecutive title winners and iconic history makers, but who stands out as the best Premier League centre-back right now?
Ranking factors
To help rank the centre-backs in order, we have considered the following criteria:
Current form - how well a player has been performing
Importance to their teams - how influential they are to their team
Role - how unique their skillset is
Reputation - what others are saying about them

After sealing a well-deserved move to Tottenham Hotspur worth as much as £52m, Jan Paul van Hecke takes his place as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.
Reunited with Roberto De Zerbi, the Dutchman perfectly suits the manager's possession-based style, which asks central defenders to collect the ball short and build from the back.

Another centre-back who sealed a move to the big six in the summer is Maxence Lacroix. The former Crystal Palace defender led the Eagles to European glory in the 25/26 campaign, ending on a high in the process.
Even without Marc Guehi, the Frenchman stepped up and ensured that the England international was not missed. Having since completed a £52m move to Chelsea, Lacroix has cemented his place as one of the best centre-backs in England's top flight.

He's a far cry from the disastrous debut, isn't he? Abdukodir Khusanov has blossomed into an excellent defender around 18 months after many doubted he would feature for Manchester City again after his first display against Chelsea.
His traits suggested a recovery was always likely, however. His speed and intelligence make him one of the best to watch in the Premier League before he's even reached his prime.

Ezri Konsa has quietly become one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. He worked his way into Thomas Tuchel's best side at the 2026 World Cup and that didn't come long after his Europa League win for Aston Villa.
As time goes on, the Villa star is becoming more and more complete both in and out of possession.

It tends to take players a while to settle in at Man City, but that's where Guehi is a rare case. He hit the ground running after completing a move in the 25/26 campaign, easing into some of the biggest games of his career.
The former Crystal Palace man is also England's most important centre-back these days, further cementing his place as one of the best in the Premier League.

It's easy to forget the level that Ruben Dias has been operating at ever since completing a move to Man City in 2020. Six years later, the Portugal international has won everything there is to win and done so whilst playing a crucial role.
Injuries have forced the central defender out of some big games in the last two seasons, but he remains one of City's most important players when fit and firing.

Like Dias, Josko Gvardiol hasn't had it easy on the injury front and needed the 2026 World Cup to send a reminder about his ability at the top level.
At the peak of his powers, the Croatian is one of the most complete centre-backs that English football has to offer and has the backing of Man City manager Enzo Maresca. The Italian has believed the defender is crucial since the start of his reign after ensuring that he put pen to paper on a new deal.

If this was a list centred around set-piece threat, then Gabriel would sit at the very top. As it is, however, he'll have to settle for his place as the third-best centre-back in the Premier League.
The Brazilian was excellent as Arsenal picked up the Premier League title in the 25/26 campaign and seems to show new levels in every season under Mikel Arteta.

Virgil van Dijk is Mr Reliable at Anfield. Even as he enters the twilight years of his career, the Dutchman is still one of the best in the world and absolutely dominant.
Where Liverpool would be without him is anyone's guess. He was considered a big-money buy when he arrived for £75m in 2018. That fee has looked like a bargain ever since.

William Saliba has looked like the next in line for Van Dijk's throne for some time. Now, as a Premier League champion, he has become the king of Premier League centre-backs.
The Frenchman is a cut above the rest in English football and looks set to hold that position for many years to come.
Whilst Gabriel is often seen doing the dirty work, it is Saliba who progresses play in possession and still remains so dominant in duels. He is almost a carbon copy of a young Van Dijk and that is only a good sign for Arsenal as he continues to get better and better.
