Patriots’ running back competition takes turn with latest roster move

FOXBORO — The [leader in the competition](https://www.bostonherald.com/2026/08/10/how-patriots-running-backs-are-pushing-each-other-in-roster-battle/) for the Patriots’ third running back spot is lost for the season.

The Patriots placed running back Terrell Jennings on injured reserve Thursday. They re-signed running back JaMycal Hasty to take his place.

This is the second running back the Patriots have lost to IR in as many days. The team [waived/injured](https://www.bostonherald.com/2026/08/12/patriots-waive-injured-rookie-running-back-sign-veteran/) rookie running back Myles Montgomery on Thursday. He went unclaimed on waivers Thursday and reverted to IR.

The running back moves leave the Patriots with Hasty, Lan Larison, Jam Miller and Hasaan Haskins behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. Hasty, Larison, Miller and Haskins will now compete for the third running back spot with Stevenson and Henderson roster locks.

Jennings, 25, began training camp on the non-football injury list but was immediately thrust into the No. 3 running back spot after being activated. Montgomery, a UDFA out of UCF, was more of a long shot.

Jennings carried the ball 23 times for 73 yards with a touchdown last season. He also caught one 9-yard pass and returned two kicks for 59 yards. He initially entered the NFL with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of Florida A&M.

Hasty, 29, spent last season with the Dolphins. He was with the Patriots in 2023 and 2024, when he carried the ball 20 times for 69 yards and caught 10 passes for 59 yards. In five NFL seasons, Hasty has 121 carries for 479 yards with four touchdowns and 60 catches for 375 yards and two scores. He’s returned 26 kicks for 537 yards.

Larison and Miller will likely see the most work in No. 3 running back duties from now until the Patriots make roster cuts after the preseason.

Larison, 24, missed last season with an injury. He was signed as a rookie free agent after the 2025 NFL Draft out of UC Davis. He was a productive back at UC Davis, carrying the ball 641 times for 3,634 yards with 41 touchdowns, also adding 127 catches for 1,626 yards and 10 touchdowns. He completed 9-of-19 passes for 97 yards with a touchdown and an interception and returned 49 kicks for 1,246 yards with one touchdown.

Miller, 22, was selected by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He finished his college career with 349 carries for 1,596 yards and 13 touchdowns. He caught 40 passes for 336 yards with two touchdowns.

Haskins entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick out of Michigan with the Titans when Mike Vrabel was head coach. He has 229 rushing yards, 119 receiving yards, three touchdowns and 646 kick return yards in three seasons.

Stevenson and Henderson are expected to take on most of the work in the Patriots’ backfield this season, but the team still dressed a third running back in all games last season. After Antonio Gibson was lost for the season, the Patriots used Jennings and D’Ernest Johnson in the role. Both Gibson and Johnson are both free agents.
