Liverpool youngster Calum Scanlon is closing in on a brand new deal at the club before being sent out on loan for the season, according to reports.

The left-back has been part of the preseason roster that Andoni Iraola has called upon, being used in clashes against Sunderland, Wrexham, and Leeds United. In that time, the youngster was used to fill in several positions, from centre-back and right-back to filling in a role on the wing where required.

With the return of several key stars, Scanlon didn't feature in the clash with AS Monaco at Anfield, as he looks ahead to another important season away from the club. The Reds are also in the market for more players, which could fill up the squad.

That's because, according to reporter James Pearce, the 21-year-old is set to join Cardiff City on loan for the coming season in the Championship.

The youngster will sign a new contract at Liverpool before making the move, with his current deal expiring next summer, which will secure his long-term future with the Reds.

It's a move that will see Scanlon reunite with the Bluebirds and their manager, Brian Barry-Murphy, following a loan stint with the club during the second half of last season.

The defender made just eight appearances in that time, picking up 191 minutes of action in and out of the team, as Cardiff won promotion from League One.

With a move coming just before the new Championship campaign, there will be some hope that Scanlon can become a regular for the side, in what will be his second spell in the second tier.

That previous time in the Championship came the season prior, when he picked up four appearances with Millwall, scoring once during a spell that was impacted heavily by injuries.

Scanlon is one of several Liverpool youngsters looking to seal a loan exit before the summer transfer window closes, with an opportunity to earn more minutes on the pitch.

Fellow defender Luke Chambers is among those also linked, with the academy prospect being linked with a whole host of clubs in the final few weeks of the transfer window.

Ifeanyi Ndukwe is another to keep an eye on after an impressive preseason, with the Austrian defender unable to compete for the senior side this season, due to his inability to qualify for a work permit. A loan move will earn the youngster points towards an eligible work permit, making him available again in the future.

James McConnell is also faced with a possible loan exit, with the midfielder also being linked with Championship sides such as Preston North End and Derby County in recent weeks.

It lines up a busy end to the transfer market for several academy stars, as Liverpool continues to look at incomings and outgoings.
