€133k-a-week former Man Utd midfielder would be perfect for Liverpool, says top scout

**Liverpool haven’t been heavily linked with signing a new midfielder this summer, but they’ve now been told to consider making a move for former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.**

The Scotsman left Old Trafford in 2024 to join Napoli in a move that many considered a risk. Signing a [€133,000 per week deal](https://www.capology.com/player/scott-mctominay-35407/) with the Italian club, he has since been a transformed player, dominating the engine room week in, week out with his physical attributes.

After two years in Italy, there will come a time when the 29-year-old considers returning to England, but it will more than certainly not be to Anfield, for a variety of obvious reasons.

Between his connection to Manchester United, where he spent 22 years from his time at their academy to the senior team, and his age, Liverpool will likely not even consider him.

Yet, former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has suggested that Liverpool should consider making a move to sign McTominay, who he has compared to Steven Gerrard.

Meulensteen said: _“McTominay has Gerrard-esque qualities and would suit Liverpool, he’s one of those midfielders that can get you goals, now how many of those midfielders are around today?_

_“He brings physicality, energy, drive, braveness, courage, goals, and makes good box runs. I’ve been very impressed with him since he left United because that could have easily been the start of his career fizzling out. But with Scott it’s the total opposite, he has bloomed and come to life.”_

Liverpool need a defensive midfielder not another No.8

------------------------------------------------------

Even if there was some realm where Liverpool would sign a 29-year-old former Manchester United midfielder, McTominay just isn’t what the Reds need.

In Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool have a better version of him anyway.

What Andoni Iraola’s aggressive team needs is an elite ball winner akin to Fabinho. Granted, there is a dearth of elite defensive midfielders, and so if Liverpool don’t sign one this summer, I imagine it will be because they haven’t identified a suitable No. 6, not because they wouldn’t like one.

Wataru Endo is the only natural No.6 in the squad but as good as he is at winning duels, he doesn’t seem likely to make the starting XI too often this season.
