Liverpool have “never” shown any interest in Tottenham fullback Djed Spence, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
There had been speculation that the England international had been offered to the Reds and rivals Manchester United, but speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said:
“According to my information, Liverpool and Man United so far never reached out for Djed Spence. So never been a possibility.”
It is not the first time that Romano has had to speak out about inaccurate information, having strongly denied claims that the Reds had agreed a fee with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola last week.
It looks like Spence is moving back to Italy
Shortly after speaking about the Liverpool rumours, Romano posted on X to confirm that a “verbal agreement” is in place for the 25-year-old to join Serie A champions Inter Milan.
The Nerazzurri are expected to pay €31.5m (roughly £27m) for Spence. He has played in Italy before, having spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Genoa before returning to North London.
Spence has reportedly decided to leave Spurs on a permanent basis after not being given guarantees about first-team opportunities by manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Will Liverpool sign a right-back?
It doesn’t appear as if sporting director Richard Hughes is actively looking to strengthen that position, despite concerns about the lack of depth.
Conor Bradley is set to miss the start of the season as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury, while Jeremie Frimpong has had his own fitness problems since moving from Bayer Leverkusen last year.
Head coach Andoni Iraola may have to rely on new arrival Ronald Araujo, as well as Joe Gomez, to provide cover on the right-hand side of defence as and when needed.
