Liverpool are set to loan promising left-back Calum Scanlon out for another season, but the deal is currently being held up due to contract negotiations.
Scanlon featured in all three games on Liverpool’s USA pre-season tour, but upon their return to Merseyside he rejoined the U21s squad.
That came as talks took place over another loan move, with Sheffield Wednesday and Cardiff among the clubs interested.
Cardiff, who took Scanlon on loan for the second half of last season, are now close to announcing a deal for the 2026/27 campaign.
However, Liverpool are first looking to tie the 21-year-old down to a new long-term contract to protect his value, with WalesOnline reporting that this is holding up the process.

Scanlon is understood to be into the final year of his current deal and therefore would not be allowed to depart on loan unless he agrees extended terms.
This is to avoid the left-sider spending the season elsewhere before leaving on a free transfer, with a loan instead expected to generate interest in a sale in 2027.
Scanlon has already taken in loan spells with Millwall and Cardiff but injuries have blighted his progress at senior level, and he made a combined 12 appearances in that season-and-a-half.
His last competitive outings for Liverpool’s first team came at the start of the 2023/24 season, when he came off the bench twice in the Europa League under Jurgen Klopp.

Though he is a hugely promising talent, Scanlon will turn 22 on Valentine’s Day, and with Milos Kerkez only 15 months older and already first choice there is little chance of moving up the pecking order.
Liverpool could still consider him part of their long-term plans, particularly with Kostas Tsimikas spending the campaign as second choice before likely leaving on a free transfer.
But much will depend on Scanlon’s performances on loan this season and, quite rightly, his own ambitions as a senior player.
His move to Cardiff is likely to be the next in a series of loans for Liverpool’s fringe players in the coming weeks, with Kieran Morrison also among those expected to head elsewhere.

This Is Anfield understands Morrison, who will turn 20 in November, is attracting interest from clubs in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and the Championship.
Luke Chambers is wanted by QPR and James McConnell has a host of suitors including Preston and Leicester, while clubs are starting to express interest in Will Wright.
Keyrol Figueroa will spend the season in the Football League with Barnsley and Salford City among those chasing his signature, and goalkeeper Kornel Misciur will gain non-league experience.
Decisions on Lewis Koumas, Jayden Danns, Calvin Ramsay and Stefan Bajcetic will be made late in the window, as is likely to be the case for Wellity Lucky and Isaac Mabaya as they return from injury.
