Arsenal are reportedly in talks over a possible transfer for former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah. The Gunners are on the lookout for defensive reinfocements before the end of the transfer window.

They had been linked with an interest in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, but the Midlands clubs are remaining firm on their £60 million asking price. It now seems that they may have moved on to Quansah.

Sky Sports reports that Arsenal are in talks with Bayer Leverkusen, but the German side are reluctant to sell. It's added that it will take significantly more than the £30m fee that Leverkusen paid to Liverpool last summer to sign the defender, who can play at both centre-back and right-back.

Quansah has impressed since making the move to Germany from Anfield. Last season saw him make 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals.

He was part of the England squad for this summer's World Cup in North America, but was sent off in the round of 16 victory against Mexico, meaning he had to serve a two match suspension. He returned to the line-up for the third place play-off vs France.

Liverpool may hold an advantage if they wish to beat Arsenal to a transfer to re-sign the defender. The Reds did have a £70m buy-back clause to sign the defender, but that has since expired.

Reports in the German press claim that option will reduce to £52m if they wait until next summer to complete the transfer.

When previously speaking about a possible return to England, Quansah said ahead of the World Cup: “I always think about the now, really.

“We’ve got a massive tournament ahead of us, and at World Cups, anything can happen from one week to the next.

“You just don’t know with football, just like I didn’t know exactly when I was gonna leave Liverpool and my time at Bristol.

“So you can be anywhere in the next two years, you can be anywhere in the next 10.

“I’ve just got to think about how I can affect the now and be the best version of myself right now, and that’s all I can do.”

Arsenal are on the lookout for a new centre-back following injury to William Saliba. Giving an update on the Frenchman, Mikel Arteta said: “William Saliba is in rest mode at the moment for two weeks. He had to do almost nothing, an aggravated injury, so it’s going to take some time to heal.”
