Big 6 Rivals Handed Blow in Pursuit of England Ace

A slew of top teams have been trying to snap up Djed Spence in the wake of the 2026 World Cup. Given his effectiveness for England amid their run to the semi-finals, this should come as no surprise.

Amongst them are arguably the two biggest clubs in the Premier League – Manchester United and Liverpool. With their immense statures in mind, they should both present themselves as highly enticing options for the Tottenham Hotspur man.

However, they might miss out on landing their man in the ongoing summer transfer window, as it seems that Spence has already agreed to move elsewhere.

According to a report from Italian outlet Gazetto dello Sport, Spence is set to join Inter Milan. He has supposedly travelled to Italy recently, where he will undergo a medical and sign on the dotted line.

Undoubtedly, this will come as disappointing news to United and Liverpool fans. Unless a late hijack is on the cards, it seems that Spence’s mind is made up.

Still, they aren’t the only clubs who will be ruing their loss. According to TransferFeed, other top Premier League teams such as Chelsea, Everton and Aston Villa were also in the mix to bring the 26-year-old on board.

On top of this, clubs from abroad, like AC Milan and Roma, were also thought to be amongst the interested parties. Now, unless they can pull off a very quick turnaround, they will have to seek out other options before September 1.

Who would benefit the most from signing Djed Spence?

Right now, both Manchester United and Liverpool are in need of a left-back. First of all, let’s take a look at United’s current situation.

United have three natural left-backs on their books at the moment – Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu and Harry Amass. Shaw is still a decent option, being an effective presence at both ends of the pitch, but he isn’t getting any younger. Furthermore, his infamously spotty injury record will always present question marks.

Meanwhile, Dorgu has been converted into a winger, while Amass is still a bit too green to be a regular starter. They also have Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot who can fill in on the left, but they’re both natural right-backs. Therefore, it makes a lot of sense for United to try to bring a top-quality left-back on board.

Liverpool have even fewer options in that position. With Andy Robertson having left the club to join Tottenham, their only natural left-backs are Milos Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas.

Kerkez has proven to be something of a disappointment since he joined from Bournemouth in the summer of 2025, while Tsimikas has always been little more than a backup option.

As such, both clubs would benefit greatly from the acquisition of Spence. Sadly, it now looks like a remote possibility, but the race isn’t over until the ink is dry.
