Everton’s Hull City exit plan for midfielder in doubt – reports

Hull City’s move for Everton midfielder Tim Iroegbunam appears to be in serious jeopardy, with reports suggesting the deal is close to collapsing.

Iroegbunam was withdrawn early from Everton’s pre-season friendly defeat to Stuttgart, and the issue is understood to be more serious than first thought.

According to Hull Live, that has prompted Hull to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements as their August 22 Premier League opener against Manchester United approaches.

However, sources close to the player are said to dispute the severity of the injury, believing he’ll be available again within weeks rather than facing a long spell out.

If accurate, that would leave the door open for a deal to be revived before the transfer window closes on September 1.

The move had looked to be gathering pace. Hull had reportedly tabled a formal offer worth more than £15 million, with talks advancing and Everton understood to value the 23-year-old in the £15-20 million range.

The Toffees’ willingness to sell stems partly from Iroegbunam’s contract situation — he has a year left with a club option to extend — and partly from a midfield that has grown more crowded following the arrivals of Christian Nørgaard and Hayden Hackney, plus a permanent deal for Merlin Röhl.

Iroegbunam made 17 league starts for Everton last season after his £9 million move from Aston Villa in 2024, but faces an uncertain path back into Moyes’ plans if this injury sidelines him for any length of time.

Everton’s live transfer tracker has more on the club’s business this window.
