Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Cody Gakpo has taken another step forward, with reports on Friday suggesting the Liverpool forward is open to joining Spurs and that the Reds may now be prepared to consider his departure.
Voetbal International journalist Joost Blaauwhof reported this week that Spurs have formally expressed interest in signing Gakpo from Liverpool.

Blaauwhof also said De Zerbi has different roles in mind for Gakpo compared with Savinho, another attacking target, and described the Dutchman as an important target for Tottenham.
According to the latest reporting from Blaauwhof, conviction is starting to build among all parties involved that a transfer to Spurs is becoming very realistic, with the chance of success now considered quite high.
SoccerNews have also reported that Tottenham have submitted an opening offer worth just over £60 million for Gakpo, with the Reds expected to reject the offer.
Liverpool are still expected to demand a significant fee, with reports placing his valuation at around £70 million.
Now, Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink has provided further detail on the player’s position.
According to Elfrink, Gakpo spoke with Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi last month, leaving the 27-year-old definitely open to a move to north London.
Elfrink posted on X: “Gakpo has, according to a usually well-informed source, already spoken with the Spurs coach last month. After that, the conclusion was that he is definitely open to a transfer to Spurs. Liverpool now seems willing to go along with it. There’s still good money in it for PSV, so interesting enough.”
Liverpool’s position is the other major factor.
Elfrink reports there now appears to be an opening for Tottenham, with the Reds seemingly more willing to cooperate with a transfer than before.
The potential departure appears linked to Liverpool’s own attacking plans.
The club have been pursuing Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, and further additions could influence whether Liverpool sanction Gakpo’s exit.
PSV Eindhoven also have a financial interest. Elfrink notes a Tottenham transfer could generate significant money for the Dutch club through the solidarity mechanism, with a five per cent payment applying to the full fee.
Cody Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV in January 2023 and has since established himself as a regular attacking option, capable of operating across several positions in the forward line.
