Chelsea have effectively closed the door on an Enzo Fernandez sale after Manchester City failed to meet their £120m demand by Friday’s 5 pm deadline, leaving the 25-year-old midfielder expected to remain at Stamford Bridge. Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea had made their terms clear to Fernández’s camp since May, with the £120m figure functioning in practice like a release clause.

Enzo Fernandez Chelsea future takes a decisive turn

City maintained daily contact with the player’s representatives, including during the final 48 hours, but no acceptable deal arrived before Chelsea’s deadline. Romano says Chelsea are happy to keep Fernández and continue with him, while City can still decide whether to return on different conditions. That leaves the transfer picture clear: Chelsea expect the Argentina international to work under Xabi Alonso. His season brought 54 appearances, 15 goals and seven assists, according to Chelsea’s official review.

Enzo Fernandez Chelsea future now rests on Chelsea’s valuation

I think Chelsea have made the right call. Fernández has just produced his best attacking campaign in blue, while his 10 Premier League goals were important because he assumed extra creative responsibility during Cole Palmer’s absence. Those numbers matter. So does the contract, which now runs until 2033 after his April extension. Selling a 25-year-old midfielder who starts, creates, arrives in the box and sets the rhythm of games would leave Alonso with a problem just before football begins.

There’s a financial argument here too. Chelsea paid roughly £107m to sign Fernández from Benfica, so accepting a softer package from a direct Premier League rival would weaken their position without guaranteeing a profit. City have reasons to want him, especially after Maresca’s move from Chelsea to Manchester City cost the club £17m in compensation, but that history gives Chelsea little reason to make life easy for them.

Fernández’s international summer adds another factor. He helped Argentina reach the World Cup final and scored twice before receiving a second yellow card in the 93rd minute during their 1-0 defeat by Spain. Chelsea therefore retain a midfielder entering his prime after a season, while Moisés Caicedo has backed keeping him.

Given the production, contract length, age and timing, £120m looks less like an inflated demand and more like the price Chelsea chose to protect a part of Alonso’s midfield. The Enzo Fernandez Chelsea future story now has a clear Chelsea position, even if City decide to test it again.
