Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher are in agreement on Liverpool’s title chances in 2026/27 season, with neither expecting the Reds to be back in title contention.
The new Premier League campaign is now just a week away, with the Reds set to kick off at Newcastle on August 23 after playing their final preseason friendlies against Como this weekend.
Andoni Iraola takes charge following Arne Slot’s firing earlier in the summer, and will be aiming to improve on Liverpool’s poor showing last season, in which it barely scraped Champions League qualification by finishing fifth — a major downgrade on the previous campaign’s title triumph.
With the Premier League’s return so close now, pundits have begun making their predictions for the season ahead, with Fowler among those to have his say this week.
The Reds’ former striker spoke to ESPN UK and named his champions, top four, golden boot and golden glove winners, and his relegation candidates.
Fowler did display some faith in his boyhood club, placing Liverpool in his top four alongside Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United. When it comes to the title though, he’s throwing his weight behind Arsenal to defend its crown.
And Carragher agrees that the Reds won’t win a second title in three seasons, and the former defender seemingly feels more strongly about it than his former teammate.

Speaking earlier this month on the Football Ramble podcast, Carragher first voiced his doubts about Liverpool being back in contention, saying: "Where we are right now, and there is still a month to go transfer-wise, I can only see Arsenal or Man City (winning the league).
"I think Liverpool need two defenders and a top right winger to be in the 'chat' or in the chase."
Carragher doubled down on his prediction for Liverpool this week, this time pointing to the Reds’ midfield as his main area of concern and highlighting that as another reason why they won’t challenge for the Premier League crown.

“I struggle to see how that midfield three [Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch] — who are all individually really good players — is a midfield three that gets Liverpool back to competing for the title. I’m not sure about that at all,” Carragher said on the latest episode of the Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet.
Liverpool is still looking to make new signings this summer, although midfield additions are looking increasingly unlikely as a new winger continues to be the priority.
The Reds are still in pursuit of Bradley Barcola, with his current club Paris Saint-Germain seemingly preparing for his departure after signing Maghnes Akliouche, while Ajax winger Mika Godts and Barcelona forward Ferran Torres both look to be on their way to the French capital.
