Ethan Nwaneri’s Arsenal future has been thrown into fresh doubt after Mikel Arteta admitted the teenager needs guaranteed first-team minutes if he remains at the Emirates Stadium.
The 19-year-old has returned from his difficult loan spell at Marseille and featured throughout Arsenal’s pre-season programme, but competition for places has increased significantly.
Speaking before Sunday’s Community Shield against Manchester City, Arteta has now delivered his clearest indication yet that another move could be considered.
“I want him to be at the club,” Arteta told talkSPORT.
However, he added that Arsenal must consider what is best for Nwaneri over the medium and long term.

Ethan Nwaneri Arsenal transfer decision hinges on minutes
Arteta made clear that simply keeping Nwaneri around the first-team squad will not be enough.
“Ethan needs to play football,” he said. “If he stays here, it’s because we can guarantee that he can have those minutes.
“Otherwise, it’s just something that is not good for anybody, I think.”
Those comments arrive at an interesting stage of Arsenal’s transfer window.
ReadArsenal reported on Friday that Nwaneri had entered discussions between Arsenal and Galatasaray, with the Turkish champions interested as talks involving Gabriel Martinelli and Victor Osimhen developed.
Nwaneri also faces considerably greater competition in north London following Arsenal’s summer recruitment.
Bruno Guimaraes has arrived in a £75million deal, while Arteta already has Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice and Mikel Merino among his midfield options.
Arteta nevertheless remains impressed by Nwaneri’s development and has repeatedly spoken positively about his talent.
The significant change is that Arsenal’s manager is now openly acknowledging the importance of guaranteed minutes.
Nwaneri may yet remain part of Arteta’s plans, but his latest comments ensure the Hale End graduate’s future will be one of the situations to watch closely before the transfer window closes.
