Chelsea had made their position clear well before Friday afternoon arrived. Any club wanting to sign Fernandez this summer needed to submit a formal offer by 5pm, or the door would close until at least next year. When the clock struck five and City had sent nothing concrete, Chelsea’s stance hardened immediately.
The club now expects their £120m-rated playmaker to remain part of the squad for the entire upcoming campaign. Now, a sale will not even be on the cards in the winter window either. This is a huge shift from the mood back in May. During that time, verbal terms had been discussed with Fernandez’s camp on behalf of interested clubs. Those informal understandings are now considered void, as reported by Sky Sports. This means any fresh move from City would essentially have to start from scratch and meet Chelsea’s steep valuation in full.
City Still Looking At Other Options To Sign The Argentine
The interest from Man City is not new or surprising. Fernandez built a close working relationship with Enzo Maresca during the Italian’s time as Chelsea boss. That is a part of why City have been linked so persistently. Speaking ahead of the Community Shield clash with Arsenal, Maresca himself hinted that a move before Chelsea’s deadline looked unlikely. This is a suggestion that turned out to be accurate.
Fernandez still has six years remaining on his contract. This gives the west London side a big leverage in any talks and very little reason to panic or lower their asking price. The club paid around £107m to sign him from Benfica in the January 2023 window.
