Winger deal done! Chelsea announce move: Brilliant move!

Chelsea have confirmed that highly rated winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen will spend the 2026/27 season on loan at Championship side Portsmouth, giving the teenage prospect his first opportunity to experience senior football away from Stamford Bridge.

The 17-year-old has been with Chelsea since the age of eight and has progressed rapidly through the club’s academy system. His development reached another level last season, when he established himself with the Under-21s, earned a first professional contract and eventually made his senior debut in Chelsea’s 7-0 FA Cup victory over Port Vale.

Kavuma-McQueen has also impressed at international level with England’s youth teams. A naturally left-footed attacker, he can operate on either wing or through the middle and has built a reputation for being direct, confident and capable of taking on defenders.

Portsmouth represents a significant step up from academy football. Instead of competing primarily against players of a similar age, Kavuma-McQueen will be facing experienced professionals every week in one of the most physically demanding divisions in English football.

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has already highlighted the teenager’s pace, versatility and potential, making it clear that the club sees him as more than simply a developmental addition to the squad.

Opinion: This is a brilliant move for Kavuma-McQueen

At 17, he does not need another season dominating youth football. He needs to discover what it is like to play when three points are on the line and mistakes have consequences.

The Championship can provide that education.

Even if he does not start every game, training alongside senior professionals and earning regular minutes against experienced defenders should accelerate his development enormously. He will learn when to dribble, when to release the ball, how to cope with physical pressure and, crucially, how to maintain consistency over a full season.

There is also the responsibility of being away from Chelsea’s academy environment for the first time. That will test his maturity as well as his footballing ability.

CHELSEA clearly believe Kavuma-McQueen has a bright future. This loan gives him the chance to prove that he is ready for the next level.
