Newcastle United new signing set for injury return as mystery absence explained

Newcastle United injuries: Matthias Jaissle’s side are in pre-season friendly action against Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg this weekend at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United are expecting a few injury boosts this weekend as the side plays its final pre-season friendly matches ahead of the Premier League opener against Liverpool.

The Magpies host the Reds at St James’ Park next Sunday but before that will face Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg in a Visit Malta weekend double-header.

Tino Livramento returned to the grass this week after a calf injury but is still unlikely to make the start of the season. Lewis Miley is pushing to be back involved this weekend following a broken fibula picked up at the back end of last season.

The 20-year-old trained at La Manga and has stepped things up at The KNOX this week. Fabian Schar is also pushing to get back to full fitness ahead of the Premier League opener.

Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen has missed Newcastle’s last two pre-season matches against Valencia and Everton after picking up a back injury while training in La Manga earlier this month.

The Gazette understands he will not be involved against Leverkusen but is expected to start in the Strasbourg match on Sunday. It will be the summer signing’s first taste of at St James’ Park matchday.

Also experiencing a home matchday for the first time this weekend are summer signings Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba and Lukas Hornicek. The same goes for new head coach Matthias Jaissle and his staff ahead of next Sunday’s big Premier League opener against Liverpool.

“It is truly an honour to be here as Newcastle United head coach and I’m so excited, focused and motivated by the challenge ahead,” Jaissle said in his programme notes ahead of the weekend matches.
