Benoit Badiashile set for Napoli move as Chelsea agree deal

Chelsea

Chelsea have agreed a deal with Napoli for defender Benoit Badiashile, with the Frenchman set to leave Stamford Bridge on loan. The Serie A club will have an option to sign the centre-back permanently at the end of the season. The 25-year-old has been given permission to travel to Italy and complete the move. Chelsea are prepared to let Badiashile leave after he struggled to establish himself as a regular under their new manager, Xabi Alonso.

Chelsea agree Badiashile loan deal

As reported by the BBC, Chelsea have accepted a loan offer from Napoli that includes an initial fee of £2.6 million, with a further £850,000 available in add-ons. Napoli will also have the option to make the transfer permanent next summer for around £23.1 million. The agreement represents a compromise on Chelsea’s earlier £30 million asking price for the defender.

Chelsea and Napoli have reached a verbal agreement, with the Italian club also expected to cover Badiashile’s salary during the loan spell. The move gives Badiashile an opportunity to revive his career after struggling for consistent minutes in London. He has not played for Chelsea since March, when he started their FA Cup match against Wrexham.

The Frenchman joined Chelsea from Monaco for £32.7 million in 2023 but has endured several injury problems during his time at the club. Those setbacks have made it difficult for him to establish himself as a regular starter. A move to Napoli could now give him the chance to play more regularly and rebuild his confidence in Italian football.

Badiashile falls down Chelsea pecking order

Badiashile’s departure comes after Chelsea added several new defenders this summer. The Blues signed Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano for an initial £16.3 million. The deal could rise by another £1.7 million in add-ons. The 28-year-old has signed a five-year deal and will compete with Jorrel Hato at left-back.

Chelsea have also signed Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for around £52 million. His arrival has pushed Badiashile further down the centre-back pecking order. The Frenchman was also left out of Alonso’s first-team training group, making a summer exit more likely. Chelsea are still changing their squad, so Badiashile’s exit will create more space in defence. It will also give him a chance to start fresh. For Napoli, the move would bring in an experienced defender without a permanent deal.

Napoli move could lead to permanent transfer

The structure of the agreement means Badiashile will have the chance to prove himself in Serie A before Napoli decide whether to complete a permanent transfer. If he can remain fit and secure regular first-team football, the Italian club could decide that the £23.1 million option is worth activating next summer. Chelsea would then receive a significant fee for a player who has struggled to become a regular part of their plans. The Blues would also save on his wages during the loan period.

Badiashile’s exit could be one of several departures from Stamford Bridge before the transfer window closes. Chelsea are continuing to trim their squad after making several additions during the summer.

Liam Delap is also said to be available for around £50m and a number of Premier League clubs are thought to be interested in the striker including Nottingham Forest and Everton.

For the time being, Badiashile’s transfer to Napoli makes sense for all parties. Chelsea can reduce their squad, Napoli get an experienced defender, and Badiashile gets the chance to get regular game time and reboot his career in Serie A.
