Nicolas Jackson remains keen to stay at Chelsea and fight for his place under new head coach Xabi Alonso, despite growing uncertainty over the striker’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
The Senegal international returned to Chelsea this summer following a season-long loan at Bayern Munich, where he made 34 appearances and scored 11 goals. Bayern ultimately decided against triggering the reported €65 million purchase clause, leaving Jackson back in west London with his future unresolved.
Jackson’s desire to remain at Chelsea is understandable. The 25-year-old reportedly wants the opportunity to impress Alonso and establish himself as an important part of the Spaniard’s plans.
He was included in Chelsea’s pre-season tour and has been given the opportunity to demonstrate his qualities before Alonso makes a final decision on his attacking options. However, competition for places is fierce.
João Pedro is currently considered an important attacking option, while Liam Delap and summer arrival Emmanuel Emegha are also competing for opportunities. Chelsea’s decision to invest heavily in their squad, combined with their lack of European football this season, means Alonso may ultimately decide that carrying several senior strikers is unnecessary.
There is also reported interest from Aston Villa, where Unai Emery is understood to remain an admirer of Jackson after previously working with him at Villarreal. That could provide the striker with an alternative should Chelsea decide that his future lies elsewhere.
Opinion: Why it may be best for Jackson to move on
While Jackson deserves credit for wanting to fight for his CHELSEA career, a permanent move could ultimately be the best outcome for the player.
He is entering a crucial stage of his career. What he needs now is regular football, confidence and the trust of a manager who views him as an important player rather than another option within an overcrowded attacking group.
Even if Jackson impresses Alonso, there is no guarantee he will become the undisputed first-choice striker. Another season of inconsistent minutes could stall his development and leave him facing the same uncertainty next summer.
A move to a club such as Aston Villa could offer something CHELSEA may struggle to provide: a clearly defined role and consistent responsibility.
Jackson has already demonstrated that he can score goals in the Premier League, while his pace, movement and ability to stretch defences remain valuable qualities.
