Morgan Rogers needed just nine minutes to score his first Chelsea goal and provide an immediate response to the questions surrounding his record-breaking £117million price tag.
The England international opened the scoring against Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge, reacting quickest after Joao Pedro’s initial effort had been kept out.
It was Rogers’ first goal since completing his British-record move from Aston Villa and came only hours after former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson questioned whether the Blues had paid too much for him.

Morgan Rogers delivers immediate Chelsea response
Johnson described Chelsea’s decision to spend £117m on Rogers as surprising and suggested the club had overpaid despite acknowledging the quality of the player they had signed.
Rogers could hardly have produced a quicker response on the pitch.
Chelsea started brightly against Real Sociedad and Joao Pedro was initially denied, but Rogers attacked the loose ball and converted the rebound to give Xabi Alonso’s side the lead after nine minutes.
ReadChelsea had already highlighted the scrutiny attached to Rogers before his move was even completed. The site examined how Chelsea turned the transfer race around in roughly 24 hours before agreeing the £117m deal with Aston Villa.
The fee made Rogers the most expensive British player in football history and ensured every early performance would attract attention.
One pre-season goal does not justify £117m on its own.
What it does provide is an encouraging first glimpse of why Alonso pushed Chelsea to spend so heavily.
Alonso is already getting what he wanted
Rogers was recruited to bring power, direct running and greater threat around the penalty area.
Alonso has previously spoken about the importance of combining Rogers with Cole Palmer and believes the former Villa attacker can operate across several positions in Chelsea’s attack.
ReadChelsea also looked at how Rogers can fit alongside Palmer, with the left side viewed as his clearest initial route into Alonso’s team.
His goal against Sociedad demonstrated another valuable trait: arriving in the right position when Chelsea attack the penalty area.
Rogers did not need an elaborate move or spectacular finish. He anticipated where the rebound would fall and made sure he was there before the Sociedad defence could react.
That sort of production will ultimately determine whether Chelsea’s extraordinary investment proves worthwhile.
There will be considerably harder tests once the Premier League starts, and a £117m price tag will not disappear because of one successful afternoon.
But after being told again this morning that Chelsea had paid too much, Rogers could scarcely have chosen a better moment to open his account.
