Portsmouth have signed Chelsea winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on a season-long loan, as per the latest Chelsea transfer news. The 17-year-old has left Stamford Bridge for the season in search of regular first team football.
Chelsea contract and first-team experience
Kavuma-McQueen came up through Chelsea’s academy and made his first senior appearance in a 7-0 FA Cup win over Port Vale. As reported by BBC, he signed his first pro deal with the west London club back in January, ending interest from several rival clubs. He remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2028, meaning this loan is designed purely to speed up his development rather than sell him on permanently.
He sat on the bench for Champions League games against Paris St-Germain and Ajax last season. He was also named in Chelsea’s squad for Premier League matches against Liverpool and Tottenham. At Portsmouth, he joins Abu Kamara, Josh Murphy, Harvey Blair, Eoin Kenny and Luke Brooke-Smith in the fight for a starting spot out wide.

Mousinho praises ‘exciting’ Ryan Kavuma-McQueen signing
As reported by BBC, Portsmouth boss John Mousinho said that his club had been looking for a winger with this exact profile. “He’s quick, direct, can play off both sides and he’s only 17,” he said. “That tells you how highly we rate him.” He added that Kavuma-McQueen trained with Chelsea’s first team this pre-season and played minutes on their summer tour. During a 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers on that tour, Kavuma-McQueen started the game and set up Chelsea’s opening goal for Dastan Satpayev, a sign of the end product Mousinho will be hoping to see at Fratton Park.
Tactically, it is a sensible signing. Ryan Kavuma-McQueen can play on either wing, giving Mousinho more options across his front line. His pace and directness should suit a Portsmouth side built to break quickly and attack down the flanks. The loan also arrives at a useful time for the club. They will be aiming to build on last season’s progress under John Mousinho.

A rising talent still learning his trade
Ryan Kavuma-McQueen was already playing in Premier League 2 at just 16 years old, and last season he featured regularly for Chelsea’s Under-21 side as they finished top of that division. That early step up against older opponents seems to have sped up his development as a footballer.
His form for England’s youth teams backs up his reputation at club level. He scored four goals in one match for the Under-17s during a 7-5 win over Germany last September. Those close to him have said he found it easier facing players his own age, having spent so long playing above them.
This loan spell gives Ryan Kavuma-McQueen a genuine test in senior football, away from academy level. How he adjusts to the physical side of the game will decide whether this loan works out for both clubs. Portsmouth fans will hope his early promise turns into end product on the pitch this season. Portsmouth finished 18th in the Championship last term, and adding a player of Kavuma-McQueen’s calibre on loan reflects Mousinho’s aim to strengthen his attacking options as the club looks to push higher up the table.
