Chelsea have been urged to consider a surprise move for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, with former United defender Quinton Fortune describing the Cameroon international as a potential “outstanding” addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Fortune believes Onana’s ability to play out from the back could make him an attractive option for Chelsea as Alonso continues to shape his squad at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have invested heavily across the squad this summer but have yet to bring in a new goalkeeper, leaving Robert Sanchez as the leading option between the posts.
United remain in control of his long-term future, with the goalkeeper contracted at Old Trafford until June 2028 and his current loan reportedly containing no option for Trabzonspor to sign him permanently.
That arrangement means a move to Chelseawould be complicated, but Fortune has nevertheless identified Onana as a player who could thrive at a club seeking to build attacks from deep.
Speaking to Premier Bet, the former United midfielder highlighted the goalkeeper’s distribution and ability to launch attacks from his own penalty area. Fortune suggested those qualities could make Onana an asset not only for Chelsea but also for other Premier League clubs such as Newcastle United and Aston Villa
‘Andre Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League,’ Fortune told Premier Bet.
‘You can see the quality for playing out from the back as many managers now want with their style of football, he can be your starting point.
‘When you’ve got a goalkeeper like Onana who can ping a ball 50, 60 yards to your striker or midfielder and break the lines with his passes, that can make a huge difference, and he’s one of the best at it.
‘He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it. I hope he can get back to his best because when you need a goalkeeper to play out from the back, he can be outstanding.’
Opinion: Why Chelsea will not sign Andre Onana
Despite suggestions that CHELSEA could consider a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, I cannot see the Blues making the Cameroon international their next goalkeeper.
The biggest reason is simply timing. Onana has already joined Trabzonspor on a second consecutive season-long loan for the 2026/27 campaign, with no option to buy included in the agreement. Any Chelsea move would therefore require Manchester United and Trabzonspor to revisit an existing arrangement before negotiations could even properly begin.
There is also a question of whether Onana represents the right fit for Chelsea’s current plans. While his distribution remains one of his biggest strengths, his Manchester United spell has been inconsistent, and CHELSEA would be taking a significant gamble by bringing in a goalkeeper who needs to rediscover his best form.
