Newcastle United are back in talks with Bayern Munich over a move to sign Joao Palhinha, GIVEMESPORT sources understand.

The Magpies have agreed a deal worth around £30m for Benfica full-back Dedic as new manager Matthias Jaissle looks to bolster his squad after replacing Eddie Howe, with all of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Kieran Trippier departing since the end of last season.

Bazoumana Toure, Ewen Jaouen, Seun Steur, Aladji Bamba and Lukas Hornicek have already been brought in this summer to try and strengthen the squad, but now the new man in the dugout is looking to add some experience to his team.

Now, GIVEMESPORT sources understand that Newcastle are still in the mix to complete a deal for Portugal international Joao Palhinha.

Aston Villa had been showing a strong interest in the central midfielder, but they have only been interested in a loan formula, while Bayern Munich are only interested in a sale at this stage, with sporting director Max Eberl confirming that a deal is currently off.

However, Newcastle are open to a permanent move for the 31-year-old midfielder, as they look for experience and quality to replace Tonali and Guimaraes in the heart of their team.

Newcastle had been keen on a move for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and had prioritised his transfer, but the Dane rejected a move to St James' Park even though an agreement with Marseille was close.

Some reports suggest Benfica are also showing an interest in the former Fulham and Tottenham star should he not return to the Premier League, but a move to England is understood to be his priority at this stage.

The player's future is still open, with Bayern Munich telling him that he is not part of their plans at the Allianz Arena, and with just weeks remaining of the window a move could now accelerate.

'World-Class' Palhinha Still a Premier League Star

via Reuters

While Palhinha may now be 31, he showed during his loan spell with Spurs last season that he is still more than capable of making an impact in the Premier League at the highest level. There was an appetite to stay in north London, but the arrivals of Tonali and Mateus Fernandes made Spurs utlimately choose not to take up their option to buy.

Palhinha scored the goals that ended up keeping the team in the Premier League, helping the club to a win over Wolves and Everton on the final day.

With Tonali and Guimaraes moving on, Newcastle are desperate for experience and quality in midfield to help the new signings and fill a hole, and Palhinha could be the perfect signing to do just that.
