The countdown to the new Premier League season is well underway, and for Newcastle United, the opening fixture could hardly be more demanding.
A trip for the Reds to face Newcastle at St. James Park on Sunday represents both a significant test and an early statement opportunity for both sides entering new phases under new managers.

That test, for the Tyneside club, has just become considerably harder.
Speaking to the media ahead of the campaign, Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle confirmed that Joelinton will be unavailable for the opening weeks of the season, ruling the Brazilian out of the Anfield trip.
The midfielder is expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks, meaning he will miss not only the Liverpool fixture but potentially further matches beyond it.
“This is something we need to solve soon,” Jaissle said, acknowledging both the immediate absence and the wider challenge it presents to his midfield planning.
The timing is unfortunate on multiple levels.
Joelinton has been one of Newcastle’s most consistently important players across recent seasons, his physical presence, ball-carrying, and defensive work rate making him central to how the club functions in the middle of the pitch.
His transformation from a struggling centre-forward following his club-record arrival from Hoffenheim into one of the Premier League’s most respected midfielders has been among the most remarkable individual reinventions in recent English football.
That standing within the squad has now been formally recognised.
Joelinton has been named vice captain of the club, a decision that reflects both his influence in the dressing room and the trust the new coaching staff have placed in him.
To have that appointment confirmed at the same moment as an injury absence adds a layer of frustration to what should have been a straightforwardly positive piece of news.
For Jaissle, the challenge is immediate.
Liverpool under Andoni Iraola will be looking to make an emphatic start to their own new chapter following a summer of significant change.
Facing that environment without one of your most physically dominant and tactically reliable midfielders is a considerable handicap.
The Premier League season begins on August 22, with Newcastle’s fixture at Anfield scheduled for the Sunday.
Both clubs enter the campaign under new management, both are navigating squads in transition, and both will view the opening weekend as an early indicator of where they stand.
Liverpool have their own concerns, with squad registration issues, ongoing transfer business around Bradley Barcola, and a defensive unit still finding its shape.
But at home, on the opening weekend, with a full Anfield behind them, they will start as favourites.
Newcastle will need their remaining midfield options to step up significantly.
Joelinton’s return timeline suggests he could be back within the opening month.
For Sunday, however, Jaissle must find another solution.
