Enzo Fernandez was booed by sections of the Chelsea support on his return to Stamford Bridge as the fallout from his £120million transfer saga spilled into Saturday’s 3-1 win over Real Sociedad.
Fernandez made his first pre-season appearance after returning from the World Cup when Xabi Alonso introduced him during the second half.
The Argentina international replaced Reece James and took the captain’s armband, but his arrival produced a divided response around Stamford Bridge.
According to The Times, boos were audible from sections of the home crowd as Fernandez entered the pitch, with some subsequent touches also jeered.
Other Chelsea supporters quickly responded by singing the midfielder’s name in support. talkSPORT also reported the mixed reception from inside Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Fernandez Chelsea reception exposes lingering frustration
The reaction came less than 24 hours after a significant development in the midfielder’s future.
Chelsea had informed potential suitors that written offers for Fernandez needed to arrive before 5pm on Friday, with the Blues demanding £120m for one of their most valuable players.
That deadline passed without Chelsea receiving a formal offer, according to The Times.
Manchester City had shown interest during the summer, while Fernandez had previously spoken publicly about his attraction to Madrid.
ReadChelsea covered how Atletico Madrid were also assessing a possible £120m move for Fernandez earlier in the window.
Those months of uncertainty appear to have affected the mood among at least part of the Stamford Bridge support.
There was still a significant show of backing for Fernandez on Saturday, however, and the fact Alonso handed him the armband was another reminder of the midfielder’s standing within Chelsea’s squad.
Chelsea now need the Enzo saga to settle
Chelsea expect Fernandez to remain after Friday’s deadline passed without the £120m offer required to prise him away.
That does not completely remove the possibility of another development before the transfer window closes, but the immediate picture has changed considerably.
For Alonso, the priority will now be turning the conversation back towards football.
Fernandez remains one of Chelsea’s most technically gifted midfielders and the manager has previously made it clear that he wants the Argentina international available to him.
Saturday showed why drawing a line under the transfer saga may now be important.
A friendly victory should have been dominated by Morgan Rogers’ first Chelsea goal and Joao Pedro’s brace.
Instead, Fernandez’s reception provided a reminder that some supporters still need convincing after a summer dominated by questions over whether he wanted to remain at Stamford Bridge.
