Chiefs drop preseason opener at Arrowhead

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WIBW) - Good thing preseason games don’t count, because the Chiefs just lost their first.

Kansas City couldn’t find the end zone in its preseason opener on Saturday, scoring 4 field goals in a 20-12 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Several Chiefs starters did not play, including Patrick Mahomes, Kenneth Walker, Rashee Rice, and Travis Kelce.

Justin Fields got the start at quarterback and completed all 4 pass attempts for a total of 41 yards. He was relieved by rookie Garrett Nussmeier, who completed 13 of 19 passes, good for an average of 5.2 per attempt.

Rookie running back Emmett Johnson was a bright spot on offense, totaling 69 yards on 15 touches (12 carries, 3 receptions). Rookie receiver Cyrus Allen caught a pair of passes for 20 yards.

Defensive back Jordan Hicks led KC on defense, notching 5 solo tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, and a pass defended.

Harrison Butker was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts. He hit kicks of 37, 35, 59, and 26 yards.

The Rams were led by 2026 1st round pick Ty Simpson, who led a pair of 4th quarter touchdown drives to give Los Angeles the lead and eventually the win. Both touchdowns were scored by rookie running back Dean Connors.

The Chiefs play their next preseason game on Saturday, Aug. 23 against the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay.
