Ben Johnson reveals surprise Bears play-calling decision

Ben Johnson reveals surprise Bears play-calling decision image

Antwaan Randle El received an unexpected opportunity during the Chicago Bears’ preseason opener. Bears coach Ben Johnson handed play-calling responsibilities to his assistant head coach and wide receivers coach for the second half of Saturday’s 34-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

Chicago entered halftime tied at 10 after producing only two scoring drives during the opening 30 minutes. The Bears then scored 24 unanswered points under Randle El’s direction. Salvon Ahmed turned a screen pass from Case Keenum into a 49-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter. Chicago later added two field goals before Coleman Bennett completed the scoring with a three-yard touchdown run.

Johnson explained the decision during his postgame press conference and revealed that Randle El’s future could eventually extend beyond coaching receivers.

“I think he’s got a chance to be an offensive coordinator in this league,” Johnson said.

Johnson also believes Randle El has the ability to become an NFL head coach.

Bears Offense Rallied Around Antwaan Randle El

Johnson said he could give additional assistants opportunities to call plays during the remaining preseason games. He took a similar approach last year when Declan Doyle, now the Baltimore Ravens’ offensive coordinator, received a second-half audition. Johnson wanted Randle El to gain comparable experience and visibility.

The Bears responded impressively.

Chicago punted twice in the second half but also produced four scoring drives. Keenum was perfect as a passer and finished with a 158.3 rating, while the Bears totaled 430 yards and averaged 6.8 yards per play. Randle El has coached Chicago’s receivers since 2021. Johnson promoted him to assistant head coach after arriving in 2025, giving the former NFL receiver a more prominent role within the staff.

Saturday represented another step in that development.

Preseason games primarily are used to evaluate players, but Johnson also turned the opener into an opportunity for one of his assistants. Randle El took advantage by helping Chicago turn a 10-10 game into a comfortable victory.

It remains unclear whether he will call plays again this preseason. His first opportunity, however, gave other NFL teams something worth remembering when the next coaching cycle begins.
