So far this summer, Chelsea have permanently sold just five players. Andrey Santos and Marc Cucurella take the headlines, costing around £50m apiece. But a largely unknown sale is thriving.

Chelsea have spent around £350m on 11 new signings, from Denner to Morgan Rogers. Five were agreed before Xabi Alonso – like Valentin Barco – and six have been made since his arrival – like Pep Chavarria.

In terms of outgoings, Chelsea have raked in around £150m. Five permanent sales so far, which, alongside Santos and Cucurella, include Tyrique George’s £24m move to Everton and Trevoh Chalobah departing.

The England defender eventually completed a £30m move to Como, booed by Arsenal fans during his debut in the week. The other sale is Jimmy-Jay Morgan, and the youngster has made a stunning start.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan has been on fire since leaving Chelsea

After a stunning loan at Peterborough, Alonso green-lighted a £4m move to West Brom for Morgan, and the attacking midfielder has taken full advantage. West Brom have recorded two wins in their first two.

A 4-1 win over League Two side Rotherham was followed by an impressive 2-1 victory over Norwich City away from home. Morgan netted twice against Rotherham, and then the winner against The Canaries.

Three goals and an assist for West Brom’s first goal against Norwich. It comes after three goals in four pre-season games for the Baggies. For £4m, Morgan has been an absolute bargain signing already.

Do Chelsea have a clause in Morgan’s contract at West Brom?

Morgan is 20. He is English, he is exciting, and he is an attacking player who creates and wins headlines. The youngster is showing the kind of form and producing the kind of numbers that goes for big money.

If he builds on the brilliant start he has already made in a West Brom shirt, the Baggies will inevitably field big offers for Morgan in a year’s time. So, have Chelsea been smart enough to include any clauses?

Well, there is no sign of a buyback clause – which is unusual in English football. That is normally a tactic that Real Madrid take advantage of, re-signing Nico Paz from Como and then re-selling him for a big fee.

But according to BBC Sport, Chelsea have included a ‘substantial sell-on clause’. Whether that’s a sell-on clause based purely on his next transfer, or the profit West Brom make, remains to be seen as of now.

Hypothetically, if Morgan continues to shine and becomes a £20m player next summer, Chelsea could make some good money. A ‘substantial’ percentage is likely to be 30% or more – which would earn £6m.
