Mikel Merino has revealed Arsenal’s hunger for more silverware has only increased ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Manchester City.
The midfielder has enjoyed an extraordinary few months after helping Arsenal win their first Premier League title in 22 years before lifting the World Cup with Spain.
Merino has now returned to north London and made his first pre-season appearance in Wednesday’s draw with Como, receiving a warm reception at the Emirates Stadium after more than six months out with injury.
However, there appears to be little danger of the 30-year-old feeling satisfied.
Speaking to AS, Merino described winning as something that becomes addictive and made clear Arsenal want to add another trophy immediately.

Sunday provides Arsenal with their first opportunity to win silverware in the 2026/27 season.
Mikel Arteta’s side face FA Cup holders Manchester City at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm BST.
Merino believes playing in matches of that importance is exactly where Arsenal want to be.
The midfielder endured a difficult individual campaign last season after a serious injury ruled him out for more than six months, but he recovered in time to feature for Spain at the World Cup.
His return gives Arteta another important option heading into the new domestic season.
Arsenal also received a significant fitness boost this week when Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi returned to training.
ReadArsenal reported on Friday that Saka and Rice were back with Arteta’s squad before the Manchester City showdown.
Arteta has since confirmed all three are available for the Community Shield, although their lack of pre-season minutes creates a selection decision for the Arsenal boss.
Merino may therefore have an important role to play in Cardiff.
Arsenal spent years trying to end their wait for the Premier League title. Merino’s latest comments suggest finally reaching the summit has increased their desire to stay there rather than diminished it.
