Pedro Neto has been named in Chelsea’s starting XI for their final pre-season fixture against Real Sociedad despite growing speculation that the winger could leave Stamford Bridge for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
Neto’s inclusion comes just hours after reports claimed the Portugal international had agreed personal terms with Al-Hilal, raising questions over whether the Saudi club can now reach an agreement with Chelsea for his transfer.
According to recent reports, Al-Hilal remain confident of completing a deal for the 26-year-old, with Chelsea understood to be seeking a fee in the region of £51 million. Other reports have put the Blues’ asking price at around €60m, broadly in line with the figure being discussed in England.
The latest developments have created an intriguing situation for new Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso. Rather than leaving Neto out of his squad while negotiations continue, Alonso has selected the former Wolverhampton Wanderers player from the start against Real Sociedad.
Neto joined CHELSEA from Wolves in August 2024 in a deal worth an initial £51.4m and signed a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge. He has since established himself as an important attacking option, although competition for places has increased following Chelsea’s continued recruitment in wide areas.
Al-Hilal’s reported interest represents a potentially significant opportunity for Chelsea to raise funds from the sale of a player they signed only two years ago. The Saudi club have been increasingly active in the transfer market and are understood to view Neto as a priority target.
Recent reports have indicated that personal terms have been agreed, although that does not mean a transfer is imminent. A fee must still be negotiated between the two clubs before Neto can complete a move to Saudi Arabia.
For Chelsea, the situation is particularly notable given the winger’s presence in Alonso’s starting side against Real Sociedad. His selection could suggest the club are yet to make a final decision on his future, or simply that negotiations have not progressed far enough to prevent him from featuring.
Neto’s potential departure would leave Alonso with another major decision to make before the Premier League campaign begins. CHELSEA have already been linked with several possible departures as they look to streamline their squad following another busy transfer window.
Al-Hilal, meanwhile, are reportedly confident that a deal can still be completed, meaning Neto’s appearance against Real Sociedad may not necessarily signal the end of the transfer speculation.
