Pedro Neto’s Chelsea future has become one of the more intriguing transfer stories of the summer, with Al-Hilal reportedly stepping up their interest in the Portugal international.
The speculation intensified this weekend after Neto was named in Chelsea’s starting XI for their final pre-season fixture against Real Sociedad. The winger started at Stamford Bridge despite reports claiming that he had agreed personal terms with Al-Hilal, with Chelsea understood to be open to a deal worth around €60 million (£52m). Talks between the clubs are reportedly ongoing.
Neto’s inclusion in the starting line-up does not necessarily mean Chelsea have decided against selling him. However, it does underline how difficult the situation has become to read. Chelsea went on to beat Real Sociedad 3-1, with Neto again involved from the start as Xabi Alonso continued to experiment with his options ahead of the new campaign.
Al-Hilal’s interest is understood to be serious, with reports suggesting the Saudi Pro League club are confident of reaching an agreement with Chelsea. Manchester City have also been linked with Neto, making the winger one of the more sought-after players in Chelsea’s squad.
Opinion: Chelsea would be making a mistake
Neto still has his best years ahead of him. His pace, direct running and ability to deliver dangerous crosses give CHELSEA something that not every other winger in the squad can replicate.
His versatility could also prove invaluable, particularly after he was used in a more advanced wing-back role during pre-season. His crossing helped create a goal against Real Sociedad, highlighting the attacking threat he can offer from wider positions.
CHELSEA have plenty of young attacking talent, but that should not automatically make Neto expendable. Players such as Estevao, Geovany Quenda and Jamie Gittens offer huge potential, yet Neto provides a blend of experience and explosiveness that could be vital during a long season.
If the player wants to remain in Europe, Chelsea should think carefully before allowing a proven Premier League winger to leave. A substantial offer may be tempting, but replacing Neto’s qualities could prove considerably harder than simply replacing his squad number.
