One of the major talking points from Chelsea’s 3-1 win against Real Sociedad on Saturday was Enzo Fernandez being booed by some of the home supporters.

In the grand scheme of things, it is not something that can be overlooked. Understandably, many Chelsea supporters are disgruntled with what they will perceive as a lack of loyalty from Fernandez.

While the club were rock bottom last season, he spent his time flirting with Real Madrid, while the midfielder probably would have joined Manchester City had they agreed a deal with BlueCo before their 5pm deadline on Friday.

That is unlikely to be the only reason why some Chelsea fans are unhappy with Fernandez right now, which brings us on to our next and ultimate point.

There is a lot of bad blood between Fernandez and England supporters following that fiery World Cup semi-final between the Three Lions and Argentina.

Chelsea supporters who follow England will not forget that, but whatever their reasons for booing Fernandez were, it is not what the 25-year-old needs right now.

I do not agree with it anyway, knowing full well what is going to happen at every away ground this season. Yes, without a doubt, Fernandez can expect more boos and hostility because of that England and Argentina game, which is why Saturday’s boos were not helpful.

After such a disappointing 2025/26 season and with Chelsea not exactly being the most popular team in the country, the club really need to pull together. Booing one of your own players will not accomplish that.

With that being said, I am not here to tell Chelsea supporters what they can and cannot do. And after all, it is very easy to understand their frustration after everything that has happened, including some of the interviews that Fernandez has given.

At some point, though, Fernandez is going to need the fans’ support if he remains at Stamford Bridge. Things are going to get much tougher for him as he travels to different Premier League grounds across England.
