Man City could still make a move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez before the transfer window closes, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said that the Cityzens are “still calling” to find out “if there is a way” to revive the move despite the 5 PM Friday deadline having passed:

“The deadline has expired. What does it mean? It means that until the deadline, Man City or any other club had the chance to sign Fernandez for £120m. No need for negotiations – like a release clause. Put the money, get the player. That’s it. No meetings, no talks, no first bid, the second bid, the third bid, the payment structure, everything clear. Pay, go.”

“Now, with this verbal clause off, negotiations would be needed, and Chelsea are in total control of the situation. But my understanding is that Man City are yet to give up on Fernandez. Man City are still calling. Man City are still trying to understand if there is a way. So as of today, I would not call the deal off. It’s, for sure, more complicated, but it’s not off.”

Man City need to sell Rodri first

It is believed that Enzo Maresca’s side are operating a one-in, one-out policy with regard to midfielders. Tijjani Reijnders’ departure for Al Qadsiah is expected to pave the way for Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi to be brought in.

For Fernandez, it is felt that Rodri’s move to Barcelona will need to be wrapped up before an offer is submitted for the Argentinian international. That is why no bid was tabled prior to Chelsea’s deadline.

What is Chelsea’s stance on Fernandez now?

Reports from sources close to Stamford Bridge claim that the Blues now expect the Argentinian international to stay. The deadline for his £120m exit was reportedly verbally agreed between all parties all the way back in May.

Of course, if City table a proposal before September 1st that matches his original asking price, the London club will have a decision to make.
