Chelsea need to part ways with Enzo Fernandez before the transfer window slams shut.

The Blues midfielder was booed on his return to Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, stealing the limelight from Xabi Alonso as he marked his debut in the home dugout with a 3-1 win over Real Sociedad.

Just hours after Manchester City missed the unofficial deadline to sign Fernandez from Chelsea for £120million, Reece James passed the torch. Upon the introduction of the Argentina international in the second half, he was given the armband and resumed his responsibilities as vice-captain.

As Fernandez stepped onto the field, brushing his hand through the turf before nervously readjusting his collar, he was met with a chorus of boos. Then, those in the Matthew Harding and the Shed End, the stands behind the goal, leapt to his defence and chanted his name.

The Argentine had lost the unwavering support of a torn fanbase. The writing was on the wall at the end of the game when Fernandez, with only Romeo Lavia in close proximity, led a solemn lap of honour, while the rest of the squad soaked up the applause in the distance.

The 25-year-old was the first to head down the tunnel and wasn't to be seen again. Although Fernandez has been one of the few Chelsea players to regularly perform at the very highest level since arriving at Stamford Bridge for a then-British-record transfer fee of £106.8m in February 2023, it's time to move on.

Alonso, who's already had his grand unveiling overshadowed, should not be expected to solve a problem that he didn't create. This summer, the Chelsea sporting leadership team have turned over a new leaf, and it would be a shame if they put their hard work to waste by suddenly throwing the former Liverpool midfielder to the lions.

Until Fernandez leaves the Blues, Alonso will find himself treading on eggshells, whether it be navigating dressing room politics or finding words to justify the actions of others. The Argentine certainly didn't help his case when his teammates paraded a 'Las Malvinas' banner following the semi-final win over England at the World Cup in the summer.

Fernandez first cast doubt on his future in March, when he refused to guarantee that he would still be at Chelsea next season. Then, while on international duty, he openly expressed his desire to live in Madrid one day.

He was subsequently given an in-house two-match ban by higher-ups at Stamford Bridge for his actions. When Fernandez eventually returned to action, James was nursing an injury, so he donned the captain's armband.

football.london understands that, at the end of May, the Argentine informed senior officials at Chelsea of his intent to leave. So, the Blues slapped a £120m price tag on his head, an offer which unofficially expired at 5pm on Friday.

Before Manchester City received an ultimatum, Real Madrid had released a statement firmly denying they had made or would make any effort to sign Fernandez. At the start of July, Los Blancos raised eyebrows when they claimed, despite their 'utmost respect' for him as a player, they have 'no intention of undertaking such an operation'.

Real Madrid also proudly boasted that they have an 'excellent relationship' with Chelsea, having signed Marc Cucurella within hours at the start of the World Cup. Fernandez, who has six years left on his contract with the Blues, has never publicly declared his intention to leave.

But there's no smoke without fire, and his agent, Javier Pastore, has been fanning the flames. Chelsea would be a much stronger outfit with Fernandez in the middle of the park, but his actions have left higher-ups at Stamford Bridge no choice but to cash in.

Alonso deserves the right to start his project from a clean slate, and he can't do that with the Argentine walking the halls of Cobham training ground...
