Chelsea decision made: Talks in progress as£40M star to get summer move!

Liam Delap’s Chelsea future is increasingly uncertain, with the striker’s omission from the matchday squad for the club’s final pre-season fixture against Real Sociedad adding further fuel to speculation that he could leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

Chelsea are reportedly prepared to consider offers in the region of £40 million for the 23-year-old, who only joined the club from Ipswich Town last summer. Recent reports suggest the Blues are keen to reshape their attacking options under new head coach Xabi Alonso, with Delap among the forwards whose futures are being assessed.

Delap arrived in west London with considerable expectations after scoring 12 Premier League goals for Ipswich during the 2024/25 campaign. Chelsea subsequently activated his £30m release clause, handing him a long-term contract and viewing him as a forward with the physical qualities and potential to develop into a top-level striker.

Unfortunately, his first season at Stamford Bridge failed to produce the impact many had hoped for.

Injuries disrupted Delap’s campaign, while competition for places made it difficult for him to establish himself as Chelsea’s undisputed number nine. He managed just two goals across all competitions, a significant drop from the form that convinced Chelsea to sign him in the first place.

CHELSEA’s attacking options have since become even more crowded. Joao Pedro is expected to remain an important part of Alonso’s plans, while the club have also added experienced striker Danny Welbeck and brought Emmanuel Emegha into the squad. That leaves Delap facing another battle for regular minutes if he stays.

Opinion: A move could be exactly what Delap needs

The striker needs regular football, responsibility and confidence. At Stamford Bridge, there is a danger that another season spent competing for limited opportunities could stall his development even further.

A move to another Premier League club could give Delap the chance to play every week and rediscover the aggressive, direct striker who impressed so heavily at Ipswich. He has already demonstrated that he can score goals in England’s top flight; one difficult season should not erase that.

Delap still has plenty of time to rebuild his reputation. A £40m move would represent a significant investment from his next club, but it could also give him exactly what CHELSEA cannot currently guarantee: a central role
