Cowboys undrafted rookie makes strong roster case with two spectacular TDs image
The Dallas Cowboys' 17-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks in their preseason opener reinforced many of the encouraging signs the coaching staff had already seen throughout training camp, with Camden Brown emerging as one of the biggest storylines. The undrafted rookie wide receiver delivered an incredible performance over the first two-plus quarters.
With more than seven minutes remaining in the second quarter, Brown led all Cowboys receivers with 62 receiving yards on three receptions, converting each of his three targets. He also scored two touchdowns, and both scoring plays proved his athleticism and ball-tracking ability.
After the game, Brown said that he approaches every day with the same mindset rather than feeling comfortable with what he has already accomplished.
“I don't feel complacent [any day]," Brown said. "I wake up with an edge, and show gratitude. I don't show up every day and be like, 'Man, I gotta I gotta survive today.’
"No, you don't wanna be like that. So me, as a person, I'm showing up every day with gratitude - every single day to play the game.I love [it]. It's a privilege."
Brown's preseason breakout did not come out of nowhere, as he has consistently turned heads since the opening days of training camp. He has been making difficult catches and producing explosive plays while working with the third-team offense.
Brown's strong performances quickly earned him opportunities with the second-team unit early last week. An injury to Marquez Valdes-Scantling later opened the door for Brown to receive a limited number of first-team repetitions.
Brown's progress continued during Thursday's practice, where he caught his first pass from franchise quarterback Dak Prescott. He became the first rookie on the roster to record a reception from Prescott during this year's training camp.
If Brown continues performing at this level, he will make a good case for a spot on Dallas' 53-man roster, though earning a permanent place will not be easy.
