Jeremy Jacquet put in a show-stopping performance on his Liverpool debut

Jeremy Jacquet enjoyed a sensational Liverpool debut on Sunday night, leaving Reds icon Phil Thompson and defender Milos Kerkez in agreement over the youngster.

Jacquet signed for Liverpool back in January, with the Reds committing to paying $81 million for his services from Rennes. The 21-year-old then suffered an injury and missed the rest of the season, in a bitter blow for the youngster.

He then suffered a knee injury during pre-season with Liverpool, missing the game against Monaco before being handed a start against Como at Anfield on Sunday. Before kick-off, Jason McAteer had expressed his worry about how Jacquet would adapt to life at Liverpool.

The plan was always for him to play 45 minutes before being replaced at half-time by fellow new signing Ronald Araujo, and Jacquet certainly made the most of his time on the pitch.

The Frenchman looked solid at the back and comfortable on the ball, while towering above opposition forwards and winning headers.

He put the cherry on top just seconds before half-time, tapping in from Cody Gakpo’s cross for a goal on his debut.

Speaking to LFC TV afterwards, Thompson was full of praise for the youngster, asking Kerkez what it was like to play alongside him.

“He was brilliant, really,” the Hungarian international responded. Defensively, calm on the ball, confident, he’s what we need.

“Plays calm, plays aggressive, Liverpool style of play, definitely.

Those comments were then echoed by goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who praised the new defender’s ability on both sides of the ball.

“Both of them played really really well,” he said of both Jacquet and Araujo.

“Jeremy had a great first half, great on the ball, great defending, controlling the space behind and in front of him. Great performance.”
