DeShon Elliott
DeShon Elliott hasn’t played in a game since midway through last season when he sustained a knee injury that ultimately landed him on injured reserve. It’s clear, though, what he still means to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
As Elliott ramps up his participation in training camp, defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has taken notice of what the veteran safety brings on and off the field.
“I mean, again, his leadership skills, the physicality showed up today. I know that,” Graham said Sunday via the team’s website. “And then just, he’s always active in the meetings. He’s active bringing the guys together. He’s a solid communicator, and that’s what we need at that position.”
Pittsburgh has plenty of options at safety. Jaquan Brisker, who is expected to start alongside Elliott, and Rayshawn Jenkins are two veterans while rookie Robert Spears-Jennings and second-year player Sebastian Castro hope to find a spot on the Steelers’ 53-man roster. Jalen Ramsey figures to play some safety in his chess-piece role on defense. But no one provides everything that Elliott does as a leader.
In a season with a new coaching staff and a revamped secondary, Elliott’s familiarity with the Pittsburgh defense could be especially valuable. And his hard-nosed style seems to mesh with what Patrick Graham is looking for.
Elliott didn’t play in Pittsburgh’s preseason opener and, as a veteran, may not play at all in the preseason. From a mental standpoint, he certainly doesn’t need the reps, but physically, the Steelers may want to see how his knee holds up in an NFL game.
Elliott is known for his physical play and, when healthy, has been a real asset to the Steelers’ defense. At age 29, and given his injury history, it may be fair to question whether his best days are behind him. But if he is able to return to form it will be a great development for Pittsburgh’s defense.
Along with figuring out the right mix of safeties relative to the 53-man roster, Graham and the rest of the defensive staff will also need to determine how much to use Elliott early in the season. His increased participation in camp is an encouraging sign, but Elliott getting back into game shape will take time.
The abundance of safeties on the roster gives both the Steelers and Elliott some flexibility if they need it. While the younger players may play a key role in providing depth and insurance for Elliott, he can provide something just as important: leadership on the field and in the meeting room.
