£170m Chelsea transfer fire sale could expose Xabi Alonso’s ruthless plan

Chelsea’s attacking hierarchy is beginning to emerge, and three separate transfer situations could reveal just how ruthless Xabi Alonso intends to be with his squad.

Pedro Neto, Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap have all attracted interest before the transfer window closes. More importantly, reports now place their respective Chelsea valuations at around £70million, £60m and £40m.

Taken together, that is £170m worth of attacking talent potentially in play.

There is no suggestion Chelsea intend to sell all three. However, the fact each has attracted suitors while Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro increasingly look like central pieces of Alonso’s attack raises a much more interesting question.

Chelsea may already be showing which forwards form the manager’s preferred core.

£170m Chelsea transfer picture points towards clear hierarchy

talkSPORT reports that Chelsea value Neto at £70m, with Manchester City interested and Al-Hilal also targeting the Portugal international.

The same outlet reports that Chelsea want £40m for Delap, with Nottingham Forest joining Newcastle and Everton in monitoring the striker.

Jackson completes the picture. Fabrice Hawkins reports Chelsea value him at around £60m, with Tottenham, Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid all monitoring his situation.

Individually, each story can be viewed as normal transfer-window business. Together, they look more significant.

ReadChelsea previously examined how Alonso plans to use Rogers alongside Palmer, with the £117m signing initially earmarked for a role starting from the left.

That immediately increased competition for Neto.

Rogers has since strengthened his claim by scoring against Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge, while Joao Pedro struck twice in the same 3-1 victory. Alonso now has a potential attacking structure built around Rogers, Palmer and Pedro before Chelsea have even played their first Premier League game.

Morgan Rogers signing changed Chelsea attack

Rogers did not arrive for £117m to become another rotational attacker.

His ability to start from the left and drift centrally allows Palmer to operate in his strongest areas while Joao Pedro leads the line. Chelsea can then use younger wide options such as Estevao and Geovany Quenda around that core.

That creates a difficult question for Neto.

ReadChelsea reported after Rogers arrived that Chelsea were not actively attempting to sell Neto, although a substantial proposal could change their position.

The market may now provide exactly that decision.

Jackson and Delap face a similar problem centrally. Both need meaningful minutes, but Joao Pedro’s form makes removing him from the starting XI increasingly difficult.

Chelsea have already had to consider where Jackson fits after his return from Bayern, with Aston Villa previously exploring a move for the striker.

Delap, meanwhile, could generate a profit if Chelsea receive their reported £40m valuation after paying £30m to sign him from Ipswich last summer.

Chelsea do not need to sell all three

Alonso may ultimately keep Neto, Jackson and Delap. Chelsea face a long season and injuries can quickly change how excessive squad depth looks.

But their reported valuations provide Chelsea with considerable flexibility.

If major offers arrive, the Blues could reduce an overcrowded attacking group without necessarily dismantling the players Alonso appears to be building around.

Rogers, Palmer and Joao Pedro increasingly look like that foundation.

The individual transfer rumours surrounding Neto, Jackson and Delap therefore tell only part of the story.

Chelsea potentially having £170m of attacking talent available at the right price may be the clearest indication yet that Alonso has already decided which forwards he cannot afford to lose.
