Veteran NFL Quarterback Suffers Painful Knee Injury – “He’s Out” For The Pre-Season

Against the Miami Dolphins on Friday night, Washington Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a sprained MCL. Mariota’s injury forced him out of Washington’s first preseason game, where 26 players were rested, including Jayden Daniels.

Mariota completed a 22-yard pass to Dyami Brown, took a hit, went down as he released the ball, and remained in the game until motioning on the next play that he needed to be taken out. Eventually, Mariota walked back to the locker room under his own power.

The Commanders‘ head coach said he hoped to have more information on Sunday after speaking with the media again after Friday’s game. We now know Mariota will miss the rest of the preseason as a result of this injury. There is no mention of missing regular-season games in the report.

We can expect a lot of Sam Hartman and rookie Athan Kaliakmanis in the next two games with Mariota out. During training camp, this has been a quiet competition behind Daniels.

There has been some weight placed on the backup quarterback position in Washington recently. Mariota started eight of the 11 games he played in 2025 while Daniels was injured. He threw for 1,695 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in those 11 appearances. It is still unclear whether Mariota’s recovery will allow him to be available behind Daniels when the regular season begins.
